Cricket

Cricket – due to the long-standing influence of British culture in Barbados, Cricket is a huge sport among locals (as well as within the rest of the English-speaking Caribbean).  Barbados is one of the international capitals of cricket and always contributes a large contingent to the West Indies team. Names like Sir Garfield Sobers, the three W’s, Wes Hall, the late Keith Boyce, Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge come to mind immediately as Barbadians who have contributed greatly to West Indies cricket.

A major arena to watch such matches in Barbados is Kensington Oval (President Kennedy Drive, Bridgetown) – a 28,000 seat arena which was first built in 1882 (with a refurbish of the arena occurring in time for the 2007 Cricket World Cup.  Kensington Oval has also hosted many non-cricket events such as matches of the Barbados national football team, hockey, inter-school athletics, Miss Barbados pageants, and concert events (including Bajan native Rihanna during her 2011 and 2013 tours  Visitors interested in attending an event held here (including cricket games) should check the Oval’s website for details:    https://kensingtonoval.org.
