Garrison Drill Hall
Garrison Drill Hall (Bridgetown, St. Michael Parish) — Built in 1790, the building was originally used as soldiers’ barracks. In 1822 it was remodeled for use as an Armory and, in 1881, it became the headquarters for the Garrison. It was purchased by the government in 1905 and used as gymnasium and frill hall for the Volunteer Force. Since the late 1970’s it has been used as the Officers’ and Sergeants’ messes of the Defense Force. Trimmed in white, its deep red exterior is made even more striking by the double staircase at its front. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were received here on a state visit. Inside, opposite the Officers’ Mess, the West India Regiment Room contains mementos and pictures of the fabled soldiers from Barbados. A guided tour is the only way to go. Luckily, this also includes the Armory and St. Ann’s Fort. Open daily 10am to 12 noon, by appointment only. Call for more info: (246) 427-1436.
